Missionary Monday - Olney Week 11
What's up?
So last Monday we taught Jacqueline's mom "Milagro" again, she's the best. Then we taught this lady named Rosa (can't remember if I talked about her last week) Spoiler alert she turned out to be super not interested.
Tuesday we used our magic 8 ball (white pages) to find Latinos in a super rich neighborhood, we knocked on the biggest house I've ever seen and a little chapina woman answered the door, we were shocked haha. She turned out not to be super interested but it was cool. In the night we were tracting and still doing our thing where we ask if we can come in like right away and it worked like a charm. (We got let in every day this week, nbd 😏) Anyways this guy let's us in and seems pretty cool, but he has read a bunch of trash anti-member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints literature. He starts telling us how he knows all about Joseph Smith and how his parents were Adventists and an angel told him to go to Texas. 😂 We tried to set him straight but he was convinced a restoration wasn't necessary because he's born again and doesn't need a church and he threw out scriptures and told us we didn't believe in the bible and we weren't going to fall for it. He said he's free Wednesdays and we have decided that the more you teach the better you get at teaching so, we decided to come back Wednesday and try some things out👺
Wednesday I don't remember much besides throwing down with Javier. So we show up ready to give him the work and the glory, he let's us in and we don't waste any time, we ask to pray then do how to begin teaching. We tell him (in a loving way) that we are there to teach and not to be taught. We talk about how everything we believe is completely biblical and we plan on showing him that, tell him if he has any questions to please wait until the end so we can get through everything. Last time he was trying to tell us that we didn't believe in the Bible so we planned to lay out all the characteristics of Christ's church for him straight from the bible. Form of the church, authority, necessity of baptism, etc. We were rolling and he was holding his peace like we asked so that was good. Then at the end we finished with talking about prophets and how "by their fruits ye shall know them" And then gave him a fruits of the church card to see all the wonderful fruits of our "false prophets". We ask some questions and he changes the subject (of course). He disregards everything we had taught/talked about and basically says he believes everything we taught and we are on the same page so he can stay where he's at (🤔) He goes back to preaching like last time and we are like freak let's pray and get outta here. So Elder Navarro asks if he will pray for us, he says of course. Elder Navarro asked him to pray to know if what we taught was true and he refused because he already knew it was since it came from the bible. Navarro asks him to pray specifically if he needs to be baptized for the remission of sins, he refuses again. Long story short he says the prayer and doesn't ask anything, he just prayed for us to be led back to the right path. 😂 We gave it our best shot. And are now a lot more confident in teaching out of the Bible so I guess that's a bonus.
Thursday we ate with Hna quirogas son Julian that was fun. Then we met with Milagro, she had read 8 chapters when we got there 😂 She's the best. Then we taught our inactive Peruvian friends, I want to have hope for them but they seem to have zero desire to come back/keep any kind of commitment we give them so there's not a lot we can do if they don't care. They gave us some wack purple corn jello pudding stuff with pineapple in it that was pretty good. Super weird but good.
Friday, the day you've all been waiting for. We had the Bible study, we showed up with our member who's an RM that looks like he's 12. We were planning on teaching the mapstoration to explain the book of Mormon/Bible with a map, BUT, like half the kids showed up and they didn't give us an opportunity to teach anything so that was a major bummer. In the middle they did this game thing where each person asks 3 random people any question they want, for the most part it was personality stuff but then one of the questions I got from one of the adults was "If someone asked you what they had to do right now to be saved what would you tell them?" (They believe you accept Christ and you're saved, once saved always saved no matter what) So I explain the gospel of Jesus Christ in like 1 minute, faith repentance baptism etc. Then the grandma of everyone comes in and did 2 questions that were for everyone to answer one by one, first one "Do you believe you're going to heaven or hell" 😂 Everyone was saying heaven heaven heaven heaven then they got to us and the three of us basically said "I'm not the judge but heaven I hope" Then her second question was "Is Jesus GOD?" (What kind of a question is that 😂 😂 😂 😂) So they all say yes then our member we brought explains the God head and we said same, they all looked at us like we were crazy 👀. The study moves on and it was super boring. They did a bunch of old testament prophesies again and one of them was about Joseph Smith! We almost fell off the couch when they read it 😂 😂 Afterwards the kids socialized and the adults started asking a bunch of questions. They were really caught off by our beliefs apparently 😂 Elder Navarro was talking with 3 of them, and I was talking with one off to the side. With my guy he wanted to throw down about salvation, I wasn't about to get into that though so I brought it back to the restoration and it was a good conversation. Elder Navarro reexplained the gospel of Jesus Christ to the other 3 and they were like "That's cool but you didn't use any scriptures, so where do your beliefs come from?" He then used one scripture for each point and when he shared the being born again scripture with Christ and Nicodemus being born of water and of the spirit (baptism) they were confounded, they tried to tell him baptism wasn't necessary but that scripture makes it extremely clear so they didn't have an answer for him, we took that as an out before they started pulling more of their baloney scriptures. Then after we texted them asking if we could finish our conversation on Tuesday (tomorrow) and they said of course so we are going back to teach them tomorrow at 7 and the time will be completely ours and we couldn't be more excited. We are going to keep the scriptures closed as much as we can and explain the establishment of the primitive church, the apostasy, and the need of a restoration. And we are bringing the elders quorum president. It's going to be awesome 🤞🏾
Saturday was a bunch of finding, got let in a few times that was cool. No one solid though. Had the ward Christmas activity at the end of the night and that was fun. Matthew Jacqueline and Milagro came, we asked Matthew how he liked the food and he said "It could be better, it's no taco bell that's for sure..." 😂
Sunday we had ward council super early, that wasn't very productive. They spent the whole time talking about how no one in the ward is going to do come, follow me and they'll all go inactive. They said everyone needed to come to ward council on the 30th with ideas for how to help the ward with it. We'll see how that goes... 😂 Church was good, Milagro came but her 4 year old granddaughter Camila was going nuts the whole time with the phone so Milagro couldn't focus like at all. That night we taught her the plan of salvation with a whiteboard drawing out how it works. Afterwards we find out she had a dream with a white guy teaching her the gospel on a whiteboard the night before and then we showed up and I (a white guy) taught her the gospel on a white board 😂 😂 😂 She took that as an answer to her prayers so that was cool. She's also on chapter 12 now in the Book of Mormon. After we tracted and got let in again, the kid was only here for vacation until next week though so he wouldn't commit to anything. But we'll take it.
Today we have a whole lot of nothing. It should be fun. Hope you all had a great week and I look forward to hearing from you! Sorry this was long 🤷🏾♂️ Also, tonight we will find out if we get transferred or not 🤞🏾
