Missionary Monday - Olny Week 4

Helllloooooooo,

So last Monday we had a lesson with a guy that we had tracted into the night before, that lesson was pretty cool until he followed us out after and asked us for rent money because he would be getting evicted in 72 hours, d'oh😬. That was a bummer. Then we had a member meal with the Hernandez family, that was pretty good. They have a pretty dope Elder Uchtdorf (German Shepard).

Tuesday we ate at the members tex mex restaurant, I had some Lomo Saltado which is basically Peruvian steak over fries 😋. Later that day we had a book of Mormon referral for a Brazilian woman, we went over and she answered. Turns out Elder Wahlquist and Elder Mccarney (the elder I replaced) had contacted her like 2 months ago and had given her a card cause she wasn't super interested. She got curious about "the mormons" afterwards, did some searching on YouTube, and ended up watching the entire restoration in Portuguese with her daughter and mom 🍿. They LOVED it and went to Mormon.organd requested a Book of Mormon and a missionary visit. So it was pretty cool finding all this out. Only problem is that they only speak Portuguese and we only speak Spanish and can sort of understand each other 😂 😂 So that first lesson was a little slow but we are all on the same page. We'll be bringing a member that speaks Portuguese when we go back tomorrow.

Wednesday was pretty slow. Lots of stuff fell through. I've been reading "SAINTS" during meals for the last few weeks and finally finished, that was a good read. However I still feel about as well informed about polygamy as Emma Smith was. 🥁*budum tsss*🥁

Thursday we found an agnostic Latino who let us in out of pity, I'll take it. He's probably like the 3rd Latino I've met that doesn't claim a belief in Jesus Christ. He said he would read and pray about what we taught/left with him though 🤞🏾. Had a lesson with a different Portuguese family and brought a recent convert who also speaks Portuguese. That ended up backfiring a little bit though. I asked her about her experience with the Book of Mormon for her conversion hoping for a simple but sincere testimony and she shrugged, paused for a few seconds, then told the Brazilian woman how giving up coffee was pretty hard... Bruh. Guess we'll be focusing on watering that flower a lil bit more.

Friday we had District meeting, that was the usual. Had a lesson with the recent convert mentioned above. We taught the restoration straight out of the Bible because her member husband suggested it, we also had to address her sharing virgin Mary stuff on Facebook so that was super awkward. She kept trying to justify it and we had to keep shutting it down. LUCKILY, we brought a member who is from Argentina and converted when he was 24, he smoothed it out real nice and spoke from experience. However yesterday she shared another virgin Mary thing so we're not out of the woods yet 🤦🏾‍♂️.

Saturday, had a bunch of finding with not a whole lot of success. At the end of the night there was a less active guy in the neighborhood where we were tracting so we knocked on his door. Some other Spanish guy answered, turns out the less active guy moved. So Elder wahlquist starts to contact the guy, he's super catholic and not really interested at all, Elder wahlquist starts telling him about the visitors center and was meaning to talk about how there are sister missionaries there but instead he said "Hay misioneros allí que son más bellos que nosotros y ellospueden enseñarle" which translates to "There are male missionaries there that are more beautiful than us and they can teach you" D'oh. So yeah that guy is gonna have the wrong idea😂 It happens.

Sunday, church lunch studies and dinner took us all the way to tracting that night, the first door that opened they let us in 🎉 It was a Spanish man and his wife, he didn't take down his "Belief window" so he kept interrupting us to compare his catholic doctrine. He had a problem with the apostasy and insisted that Christ left his church with Peter. Then he ranted about all the other religions that didn't believe in Christ and how weird that was. He started to list off a bunch of Asian religions and he had Mormons on his list😂 That was fine since we introduced ourselves as missionaries for the church of JESUS CHRIST of latter day saints. Unfortunately when we got to Joseph Smith and the book of Mormon the jig was up and he caught onto us 😉 😂 He threw his head back and sighed 😂 😂 By the end he had chilled out a little bit once he realized "The Mormons" weren't the heathen he thought they were. Him and his wife committed to read the book of Mormon and to pray to know. We'll be back in a week 🤞🏾

Today we will be having district activity which will be a 5 car trunk or treat🎃, we will see how that is.
I hope you all had a great week and I look forward to hearing from you!

Elder Beck
