Missionary Monday - Olney Week 3

What's up?

So this week we had zone conference and that was good, it was all about the priesthood/power of our calling so that was cool. They also had the senior missionaries inspect the cars so everyone was getting roasted by the old ladies.
We met a pretty dope cop at McDonald's who's only job is to sit in there all day and make sure no one throws their food at the workers when they make it wrong. He knew the names of almost everyone who came in it was nuts. We talked while we ate and when he learned that I had come from Anacostia he said I had some serious street cred 😂 😂 Then he bought us some apple pies 🤜🏿
We had an awesome lesson with Eduardo (Brazilian kid) Hes been taught almost everything and still thinks all churches are good so we got a Brazilian member from the same complex to come with us and talk to him in Portuguese since there's a tiny bit of a language issue for full comprehension. The member was able to teach him the majority of the restoration and bear testimony of it and it was awesome! (Spoiler alert, he didn't come to church...) He started playing in his adult league on Sundays so that's a problem...
Friday I was with Elder Kelly (French missionary) and we ended up helping a woman move like all day with another pair of missionaries so that was pretty fun. She was moving from a townhouse to an apartment in a place called "Leisure World" which is a MASSIVE retirement community that is super gated off. It has been pretty cold these last few weeks and during the move in the morning it was 38 so that was rough. I miss my morning runs in June with Josue when I didn't need a jacket. 😪
Then Friday night president Johnson called and asked Elder Wahlquist if he knew how to lasso, he said yeah. So president explained that the Marriotts (Yes the hotel Marriotts) were holding an event for the church on their ranch in Virginia with a ton of diplomats and they wanted him to bring an elder who could lasso to teach everyone. So lucky for Elder Beck he got to go along for the ride too 😂 It was super weird driving an hour and a half out of the mission with president and sister Johnson but it was a good day. Our job was pretty much to stand by the fake cow and say "howdy" and hope they get curious about the fake cow and rope. We ended up talking to diplomats from everywhere, my favorite was a guy from khazikstan, he was hilarious. Oh and at lunch they had byu dancers doing country dancing and Indian dances, that was pretty cool.

Apostasy:
This week I've been studying a lot about the apostasy, and I'll probably keep it a part of my study for the near future, I love it. So today I'll talk about how/why it's so pivotal. In a talk given by Legrand Richard's "One Lord, one faith, one baptism" He talks about a conversation he had with a 'scholar' where the man told him (basically) You Latter day saints are a bunch of dummies, you don't know the strength of your position. It's so strong that there is only one other option in the whole Christian world and that's the position of the Catholic church. If we (catholics) are right, you are wrong, along with the protestants who are apostates from us; if you are right, we are wrong and the protestants are wrong with us. ------ This whole situation hinges on whether or not there was an apostasy. Elder Richard's goes on to say that the catholics AND the Bible cant both be right because the Bible proclaims an apostasy from the original church and a restoration in latter days. I know all of you who have read all the way until this point already believe that there was an apostasy but I'll give you some scriptural evidence as a steroid for testimony 😉
Old Testament:
Isaiah 24:5, Amos 8:11-12
New Testament:
2 Thessalonians 2:2,3,7,8 Paul is writing an epistle to the saints of the "church of the Thessalonians" he is warning them of the rumors among them that the second coming of Christ was near. He shut that down pretty hard by telling them the second coming wouldn't be until after a falling away came first (apostasy).
Galatians 1:6-9 Paul is writing to the saints in Galatia, he warns them of people teaching false doctrine. He is again super bold telling them how shocked he is at how quick they've removed from the original teachings they are (apostasy growing) and that if anyone teaches anything other than what Christ or his apostles taught, they'll be cursed.
2 Timothy 4:1-4
1 Timothy 4:1-3
And then the prophesy of a restoration by John in Revelation 14:6 He talks about an angel flying through heaven with the everlasting gospel to preach to those on earth. It wouldn't make any sense for the gospel to be brought to the earth by a heavenly messenger if the gospel was still present on the earth.
I figure these were some of the scriptures Elder Richard's was referring to when he said the Catholics AND the Bible can't both be right. I don't know about you, but I think it's pretty cool how the more you learn, the more the doctrine we believe makes sense rather than only yielding more questions.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this email and I hope you had a great week! I look forward to hearing from you!
